It Began in Africa

Telling Africa's stories began for NHNZ film-makers when shooting with the latest gear meant a Super 16mm film camera and the only brief was to capture never seen before animal behaviours.

The collection represents impressive landscapes and wildlife from East Africa around Tanzania, Kenya, down into Southern Africa through Botswana and up into Namibia and the Skeleton Coast. Shot by established producers and cameramen the footage is often breath-taking, sometimes alarming and always informative.

Years on, our dedication to that film-making tradition is renewed as we announce the arrival of a further 50 hours of HD footage to our African collection. Avalanche Exclusive HD Footage 1080/25p

The NHNZ Moving Images show reel gives you an idea of the wonderful stock footage held in our library. Get the Flash player to see this video.

Until now really big avalanche footage has only been available in standard definition.

This southern winter NHNZ Moving Images commissioned Mike Single, Emmy award winning Kiwi-born cameraman, to shoot some of the largest controlled avalanches ever filmed.

Set against a backdrop of sheer peaks and plunging forested valleys, the footage was shot on a bluesky day under powdersnow conditions. The scale of these avalanches turns giant size snow diggers into matchbox toys, and dwarfs the tourism highway and Homer Tunnel that takes thousands of visitors to the famed Milford Sounds every year.

NHNZ Moving Images has over 30 minutes of incredible HD 1080p25 footage available for all broadcast and creative use. The footage was originally shot at 60 fps which means that we can also offer it at 1080p25 slomo.

Ultimate storm-chaser

In 1995 Geoff Mackley rocketed from relative obscurity to cult hero status when he scaled an erupting New Zealand volcano in pitch darkness to capture the action from the crater's edge. Since then he has photographed countless natural disasters and their aftermath forging a reputation as one of the world's ultimate storm chasers.

When it comes to promoting Mackley's collection, unique is an understatement. From the edge of the crater to the eye of the storm his images showcase mother nature at her worst (or best in Geoff's opinion) making adjectives like death-defying, dangerous and downright crazy more apt when it comes to describing his portfolio.

Geoff goes to extreme lengths to be first on the scene and is entrusting NHNZ to represent the resulting footage while he gets on with the serious business of storm chasing!

Filmed with a Panasonic AJ-D800 DVC Pro digital camera (PAL) NHNZ has Geoff's entire collection of exclusive, stunning HD footage for inclusion in documentaries, news reports, first on the scene accounts, educational programmes and advertising.

Geoff Mackley at Mount Etna.

We will have his footage first, and to you fast.

From the erupting mouth of a volcano in Indonesia, or the path of a hurricane in Belize to the train of a tornado in Kansas, this adrenalin junky has a hard earned reputation for exclusively capturing catastrophic events.

Working as a freelance photographer since 1980 specialising in filming breaking news, a decade later Geoff began taking a video camera along to emergencies and soon attracted the attention of networks around the world as consistently being the first person into disaster zones.

His explosive images captured at Mt Ruapehu in 1995 changed the landscape and Geoff forever. From that moment on the talented cameraman was hooked. Using the highest tech equipment available, he tracks every disaster from his home in Auckland venturing to the most extreme environments for the ultimate accolade of first on the scene. The result is intense, riveting and at times horrifying footage.

Whether it's erupting volcanoes, hurricanes, cyclones, typhoons or tornadoes, chances are he's shot it - and lived to tell the tale. Not surprisingly Geoff has also been a magnet for media attention as his work spawned a new breed of reality media. Despite the glare of the limelight, storm chasing remains this intrepid Kiwi's primary focus. The resulting footage is high impact, arresting and, as Geoff can attest, highly addictive.

Moving Images China Footage

Chinese circus acrobats.

A construction boom has been taking place in China resulting in the investment in massive building projects, including ports, railways, roads, airports and commercial buildings and residential housing, is all designed to steamroll China's economy into the modern world.

NHNZ Moving Images now offers the first high definition footage from the Shanghai World Financial Center construction project, the construction of the Yangshan deep water port near Shanghai, and the "bubble wrap" construction nicknamed the 'Water Cube' - the National Swimming Center which is due for completion in time for the Beijing Olympic Games in August.

Footage of China from before the current economic boom includes busy street scenes, city views, outdoor markets, river life and transportation.

Circus acrobats have been a part of Chinese culture for the past 2500 years. It is believed that acrobatics grew out of labour and self-defense skills, developing over time into a performing art. They are strictly trained from an early age; the techniques practised extremely difficult; and the training long, hard and intense.

Shot in HD, all this footage was filmed in partnership with China Intercontinental Communication Center (CICC) and National Geographic. All was shot using DVC Pro100 either in 720p25 or 1080i50.

Moving Images represents HD footage from Gulliver Media

NHNZ has recently expanded its HD collection through becoming agents for several companies. Although having just recently joined the list of companies we represent, Gulliver Media have been independent film makers since 1981 and specialise in wildlife and natural history projects. Gulliver also produces a wide variety of educational video programs on topic areas such as ecosystems, conservation and sustainability. As well as filming Australian wildlife and landscapes, they have also filmed in China.

Australian HD

Australia's birds and wildlife are represented amongst the footage: from black necked storks and black cockatoos to wallabies and water buffalo. A wide range of domestic and native wildlife footage is available. Water buffalo were introduced into Australia in the 19th century from Indonesia and can be found in the wild, especially in the coastal wet areas. A growing domesticated industry emerged in north Australia in the 1980s.

Also featured is the rare and endangered Australian native bilby, a desert-dwelling bandicoot with huge leathery ears like a rabbit and a long tail and snout. The bilby is a nocturnal marsupial omnivore whose pouch opens backward so as not to be filled with soil while digging. Footage of Australia's largest native worm, the Giant Gippsland Earthworm, is included. It is a protected species because of its decline in population. Disturbance to habitat and the use of pesticides and herbicides are blamed for this.

Sugar is a major contributor to the Queensland economy, produced from sugar cane grown on the coastal plains and river valleys. Narrow gauge steam trains known as Puffing Billys, once hauled sugar cane from the farm to the mill all along the Queensland coast. There are some twenty mills and two sugar refineries in Queensland, the refineries situated at Mackay and Bundaberg. Footage associated with sugar cane production and transportation is included. Industries associated with sugar production have developed in the area, like rum production i n Bundaberg and chocolate. The sale of chocolate bilbies at Easter instead of the more traditional eggs, was used to raise funds to support the endangered bilby.

There are diverse landscapes in Queensland: arid uplands and wet coastal plains; tropical rainforest, mangroves and stunning beaches; spectacular national parks and tropical islands. Footage of ideal holiday destinations is available to help get you through the last of the winter's chill: scenics of bush-covered hillsides dropping down to golden sandy beaches, with waves lapping gently on the shore, shady swimming holes, and yachts bobbing gently in the marina.

In 2005, a decommissioned warship, the HMAS Brisbane, was sunk as an artificial reef and dive site. The ship was scuttled after careful and extensive preparation and one last journey along the coast to its final resting place east of Mudjumba Island off the Sunshine Coast. We have been provided with footage of the preparation and last journey of the warship, plus extensive shipping related material.

All this is available on HDCAM 1080/50i, as is the following footage taken in China.

HD from China

We have footage shot in and around Beijing and Shanghai plus some showing life in provincial cities and more rural scenes. There is some time-lapse footage as well.

Australian SD

In addition to the HD footage, Gulliver Media has also sent some in standard definition on BetaSP. This is mainly shot in more arid landscapes and includes drought footage. Exploitation of the country's mineral wealth, particularly of iron ore, is also featured. More native wildlife and especially birds are included.

The New Movers and Shakers in the HD Market

Our recently revamped footage service, NHNZ Moving Images, is aiming to establish NHNZ as a leading supplier of quality, factual HD footage to the film industry.

NHNZ is well known for leading the way in innovative factual television production. As an early adapter of new technology and to ensure maximum marketing versatility, it has been our policy for some years to shoot exclusively in HD at a frame rate of 25p for NHNZ-owned productions. Consequently, NHNZ owns an enviable and constantly growing collection of quality HD footage.

This has now been greatly increased by NHNZ's HD Project, begun last year when we negotiated representation deals with some of the best international film makers and production houses to sell their HD stock footage thereby increasing our extensive collection on offer to our international client base.

Filling the Gaps

The development and expansion of NHNZ Moving Images aims to meet growing demand for HD footage. The project's initial phase included targeting over 80 production houses and filmmakers and negotiating the right to represent their work.

As a result we are delighted to be newly representing: Aliens of the Sea, Artbeats, Bennett-Watt HD Productions, Gulliver Media, Nautilus Productions, Skyworks and Wilderness Video. These collections include not only wildlife footage (Aliens of the Sea, Gulliver Media, Wilderness Video), but also more general content (Artbeats) and some specialist collections which enhance existing NHNZ holdings (travel from Bennett-Watt and aerial footage from Skyworks).

We are about to enter the next phase of logging the extensive and varied footage collection for upload to our redeveloped online shop.

Our new website, which is currently under development, will enable clients to view a significant representation of NHNZ's existing and new collections and either immediately download shots, or request additional clips, at the push of a button using the very latest internet technology.

Moving Images Collection Exponential Growth

NHNZ Moving Images has represented a number of HD collections for some time from: Copyright Shots Film & Video (a Spanish based collection), Greg Hensley Productions (a specialist in unique time-lapses and American wildlife cinematography) and Computerised Time Lapse UK Ltd. Of great benefit to our clients, the last two companies have recently invested heavily in transferring their original 35mm film to HD masters and both have more film material which can be transferred to HD on request if required.

As a result of last year's extensive and systematic search for HD footage we now hold over 500 hours of HD footage in our library.

Breaking New Ground

The contract with Gulliver Media is for exclusive worldwide distribution - a first for NHNZ Moving Images. This deal reflects the confidence of our new clients have in our ability to reach the market, and generate revenue for them.

Our agreement with Artbeats sees another departure for NHNZ as we become the retail reseller of their very large range of royalty free disks for New Zealand. This is a first time the library has had a royalty free collection to re-sell.

We will continue to identify further representation agreements enabling us to add more superb footage to the collection over the next few months. These additions combined with fresh footage from NHNZ's new productions will ensure we meet our aim of becoming a world leader in the supply of factual HD footage.

Super Scavengers

Tasmanian Devil.

Wild, fast and fun, Super Scavengers takes in search of the truth - the real truth - about scavengers. Australian zoologist Chris Coupland is an authority on the Tasmanian Devil, a tough marsupial carnivore that's also a scavenger. Chris's day job is to care for, and educate the public, about these unique Australian animals. Interestingly, some biologists believe that only two animals have stronger jaws than the Tasmanian Devil, the great white shark and the hyena. Chris broadens his horizons in this programme, leaving Tasmania in search of the world's iconic scavenger species, including the vulture, dingo, jackal and hyena.

Nature's great opportunists, scavengers are feared and loathed in the environments they inhabit. But Chris aims to change that as he teaches the world about the animals close to his heart. He will referee an eating competition between dingo pups; narrowly avoid giving his fingers to a Cape Griffin vulture; have his room trashed by a gang of partying baboons; and watch opportunistic jackals at work on the African coast. Super Scavengers shows these species doing what they are best known for.

It was while shooting for this programme that NHNZ producer and director Judith Curran was attacked by a leopard, sustaining serious injuries. This programme was produced for Discovery Channel. Footage was shot on DVC Pro, MiniDV and DigiBeta.
